Report on the 2023 Nuclear Data Workshop

The joint meeting of the Nuclear Data Workshop and the PHITS Workshop for the year 2023 was held at the Tokai-mura Industry and Information Plaza, on November 15$$sim$$17, 2023. The Nuclear Data Workshop was originally organized by the Japan Atomic Energy Research Institute and the Sigma Research Committee in 1978. This year, the Nuclear Science and Engineering Center is the main organizer and the author is the chairperson of the committee. The PHITS Workshop is a gathering of PHITS users and developers, where presentations are made on PHITS applications in the fields of radiation shielding, medicine, space, etc. This joint workshop was planned to provide a good opportunity to obtain new research perspectives through mutual research exchange. The meeting consisted of 14 presentations on nuclear data, 12 presentations on PHITS, and 25 poster presentations. In this report, we mainly introduce the lectures at the nuclear data workshop.

A side event at the IAEA 67th General Conference "Providing the best nuclear data for tomorrow's nuclear solutions; Challenges and opportunities"; For "visualization" of nuclear data usage

At the request of the EC/Joint Research Center, the author attended on an EU-sponsored side event "Providing the best nuclear data for tomorrow's nuclear solutions: challenges and opportunities" held simultaneously at the IAEA 67th General Conference as a panelist. Presented were the prospects for nuclear data activities in Japan and discussed the sustainability and revitalization of nuclear data activities. In addition, based on the roundtable discussion at this side event, the Nuclear Data Section held a meeting consisting mainly of panelists to consider future responses. In this article, I would like to report on the side event and subsequent follow-up meetings and discuss the background of these meetings.

Calculation of radiation damage using PHITS and nuclear data and verification experiments

The number of displacements per atom (dpa) derived from the NRT model is used as an index of irradiation damage in structural materials of nuclear facilities. On the other hand, in 2018, Nordlund reported the results of a non-thermal recombination correction (arc) of defects derived by molecular dynamics calculations. In order to enable irradiation damage estimation (NRT-dpa and arc-dpa) of materials, we have developed a method to evaluate the irradiation damage of materials over a wide energy range using the PHITS and the nuclear data library. In order to validate the calculation method, a cryogenic irradiation apparatus was developed, and measurements of the displacement damage cross sections related to dpa for proton irradiation were performed. This report presents a presentation report at the joint session of the Nuclear Data Division and the Materials Division of the Atomic Energy Society of Japan.

Initially, the Sigma Committee consisted of two sides of the same coin: the Atomic Energy Society of Japan (AESJ) Sigma Special Committee and the Japan Atomic Energy Research Institute (JAERI) Sigma Research Committee. It is original the Sigma Committee conducts actual work such as research, evaluation and evaluation of nuclear data (including measurement, called "nuclear data activity") rather than a "place for examination" that can be felt from the sense of the word "committee". At present, the AESJ's Investigation Committee of Nuclear Data and the JAEA's JENDL Committee are working independently, and the JENDL Committee has taken over the actual work of producing nuclear data files. On the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the Sigma Committee, we have reviewed its progress and historical description so far given in the references.

The content of the paper that received the Paper Award of Atomic Energy Society of Japan in 2021 is outlined. Although the use of deuteron accelerator-based neutron sources has been proposed in various fields, deuteron nuclear database accurate enough to be applied to the design study of such neutron sources had not been developed. Under these situations, we had developed a deuteron nuclear database, JENDL/DEU-2020. It contains evaluated deuteron nuclear data for light nuclei ($$^{6,7}$$Li, $$^{9}$$Be, $$^{12,13}$$C), which are candidates for deuteron beam irradiation targets of the neutron sources. Evaluation of JENDL/DEU-2020 was performed by using the code system DEURACS with further modifications. In order to validate the accuracy of the database, simulations using the particle transport code were performed under various conditions with different target nuclides and incident deuteron energies, and the results were compared with the available experimental data. As a result, it was found that JENDL/DEU-2020 significantly improves the prediction accuracy of experimental data under a wider range of conditions than other nuclear reaction databases or the nuclear reaction models implemented in transport calculation codes.

Calculations for radioactivity evaluation of research reactors for near surface disposal and their application methods

The outline of the presentation at the joint session of Research Committee for Nuclear Data and Subcommittee on Nuclear Data in the Atomic Energy Society of Japan 2022 Autumn Meeting was contributed to Nuclear Data News. As part of the study on the near surface disposal of waste from research facilities, we are studying a method for evaluating the radioactivity inventory of waste generated by the dismantling of research reactors. In the radioactivity evaluation of the research reactor, we have investigated the method of calculating the neutron transport in the reactor and using the obtained neutron spectrum to calculate the activation of the internal structure by the ORIGEN-S code. In recent years, we have introduced and evaluated libraries created based on JENDL-4.0 and JENDL/AD-2017, and we will introduce the status of their examination. And we will introduce how to apply the results obtained by the radioactivity evaluation calculation to burial disposal.

This article explains the results of integral test of JENDL-5 by benchmark analysis in fast reactor system, which were presented in a special session of the 2022 Spring Annual Meeting of the Atomic Energy Society of Japan (AESJ). The latest version of Japanese evaluated nuclear data library, JENDL-5, was released in December 2021. In order to confirm the applicability of JENDL-5 to the fast reactor system, we conducted a set of benchmark analysis using the integral experiment data included in the fast reactor nuclear design database which is being developed by JAEA. With respect to major nuclear characteristics in the standard fast reactor system, it was confirmed that the ratios of analysis result and experimental result (C/E values) based on JENDL-5 were almost the same as those of JENDL-4.0. In the special session, the results of sensitivity analysis were reported. Since the results have been described in the proceedings of the AESJ meeting, we add the results of the versions under development of JENDL-5 and discuss their relationship with the reported results of sensitivity analysis.
